EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
