RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
