BBC Gaza Film Considered a 'Significant' Breach of Media Regulations, States UK Media Regulator

The public service broadcaster was found to have committed a "serious breach" of media regulations by omitting to mention that the presenter of a film about the Gaza conflict was the son of a Hamas administrator, as determined by regulatory body Ofcom.

An probe by the broadcasting watchdog into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the documentary was "substantially inaccurate".

The BBC's director general had already issued an apology, saying there had been "a major oversight in relation to truthfulness".

Ofcom has instructed the corporation to air a prime-time announcement about its findings.

"As this represents a significant violation of our code, we are ordering the BBC to air a statement of our determinations against it on BBC2 at 21:00, with a date to be finalised," the regulator stated.

'Potential to Erode Credibility'

The watchdog's statement stated: "Our investigation concluded that the programme's lack of disclosure that the voice's parent occupied a role in the Hamas-run authority was substantially inaccurate.

"Consequently that the audience did not have critical information which may have been highly relevant to their assessment of the presenter and the content he shared.

"Confidence is at the heart of the bond between a broadcaster and its audience, especially for a public service broadcaster such as the BBC.

"This oversight had the risk to damage the very considerable amounts of confidence that viewers would have placed in a documentary produced by the BBC about the Israel-Gaza war."

The documentary was withdrawn from the online platform in the month of February after the presenter's familial connections emerged, and in this past July an broadcaster's internal assessment determined it infringed the broadcaster's editorial guidelines on truthfulness.

A BBC spokesperson commented: "The authority's determination is in line with the results of the internal assessment, that there was a major oversight in the programme in relation to the corporation's content standards on accuracy, which corresponds to regulation 2.2 of Ofcom's Broadcasting Code.

"We issued an apology for this and we agree with the regulator's ruling in its entirety. We will follow the directive as soon as the schedule and language are finalised."
